A Red Circle is proud to recognize two momentous occasions right now: Black Philanthropy Month and Give 8/28 Day.

Since its inception in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and Reunity (formerly the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network), Black Philanthropy Month has been an annual month-long concerted giving campaign focused on elevating the value of black giving and equitable funding of black-founded non-profit organizations.

Give 8/28 Day – largely inspired by the impact of BPM – was started in 2018 by Young, Black & Giving Back (YBGB) Institute’’s founder, Eboni Johnson Cooper. If you’re wondering about this specific date, 8/28 has been a day of significance throughout black history. From the day a 14-year-old Emmett Till was murdered in 1955, causing a ripple in the civil rights movement that inevitably led to Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream’ speech in 1963, to the first day Louisiana experienced Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when the lives of black Americans were disproportionately affected, to the day acclaimed actor and Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman, died in 2020 – all these events happened to fall on August 28.

This year, A Red Circle has led a campaign of its own throughout BPM that culminates on Wednesday, 8/28. The initiative highlights staff members who call attention to our organization’s invaluable work and purpose of enriching the lives in the community.
